Silverton’s outback history lives on

Silverton sits about 20 kilometres from Broken Hill, a small outback town where Australia’s history still feels close.

Among its old buildings is a historic butcher shop, now used as an art gallery.

It was once connected to a cousin of Sir Sidney Kidman and supplied cattle for the miners working in the district.

From places like this, the story of cattle trading in Australia began to grow into something much larger.

Silverton also carries the story of Dame Mary Gilmore, who appears on the $10 note and began her career there as a school teacher.

The town later became famous as a filming location for the second Mad Max movie, adding another chapter to its long history.

Today, Silverton’s old buildings have been well maintained, giving visitors a rare look into the people, work and stories that helped shape Australia.
