A growing cohort of Queenslanders do not like the Prime Minister or his Labor government.
The dislike extends as far as a majority of voters in the Sunshine State backing One Nation leader Pauline Hanson ahead of Albanese as their preferred prime minister. They also prefer Angus Taylor over Albanese in a head-to-head contest.
The latest quarterly analysis of Newspoll surveys conducted by Pyxis Polling & Insights highlights the unprecedented march of One Nation at the expense of Labor, the Coalition, independents and minor parties. Analysis of Newspoll quarterly snapshots over the past 12 months reveals the rise of One Nation across the country.
Comparing the July to September period last year with this year, One Nation’s primary vote in Queensland is up by 26 per cent. Core support for One Nation is up by 21 per cent in NSW over the same period, 20 per cent in South Australia and 18 per cent in Western Australia and Victoria.
Under successive Coalition federal governments, Queensland was a fortress for the Liberal National Party. Few believed that dynamic would change under Albanese, who is more at home wearing his South Sydney Rabbitohs or NSW Blues jersey and sipping craft beer at the Bob Hawke Leisure Centre in Marrickville than donning a Maroons jumper and necking a XXXX Bitter at the Caxton Hotel in Brisbane.
Ironically, it was Peter Dutton, a Queenslander, who let Albanese’s Trojan horse, crammed with promises that Labor wouldn’t raise taxes or target trusts, capital gains tax discounts and negative gearing, deep into Maroons territory. Dutton’s seat of Dickson was one of the first to fall.
By the end of election night last year, Labor had won seats from Cairns to Brisbane and celebrated its best result in the state since Kevin Rudd’s 2007 victory. But the love affair ended almost as quickly as began. Support for Albanese in Queensland was fading by November last year and fell off a cliff following Australia’s worst terrorist attack, at Bondi Beach on December 14 last year.
