Ellen Fanning: Yes, there’s a lot of motions. The big one today though, Jack, was one that — and I’ll read it — says that this convention of the LNP calls on the Federal Coalition to abandon its support for a net zero mandate.
Now, there’s a huge push coming around this. I think from Advance Australia, which is a big lobby group in Australia, extremely well funded. And I think I got an email earlier this afternoon that Gina Rinehart has thrown her weight behind that proposal as well.
Jack McKay: This was a motion, as I said, that passed the LNP convention today. And it was something very much backed by the National Senator Matt Canavan from Central Queensland. This could put some pressure on Sussan Ley as she goes about navigating the policies of the party now that she’s in charge of the Coalition. And also, what does that mean for the Federal Coalition in terms of the agreement that she has with David Littleproud?
Ellen Fanning: Yeah, she’s got a lot to navigate as she reviews all policy areas. But there’s a lot of movement coming behind this “Dump Net Zero” campaign — Gina Rinehart joining the campaign, the far-right lobby group Advance pushing for it. It’s one to keep an eye on as the Federal Government needs to come out and present the latest interim targets to get to net zero by 2050.
Ellen Fanning: Is that it, Jack? It was an interesting one.
Jack McKay: Oh, there’s more to come. We’ve got two more days of this, so they won’t get through all these motions in one day. They sort of stagger it out. But over the weekend, we’ll hear from the Nationals leader David Littleproud. And on Sunday, the Premier David Crisafulli will be giving his speech to the party faithful.
Ellen Fanning: Thanks, Jack. Appreciate it. Lovely to talk to you.
Jack McKay: Thanks, Ellen.
Ellen Fanning, Jack McKay.
